Watch war criminal Donald Rumsfeld being heckled by protesters during today's Congressional hearing. Pretty gratifying.
Geez. Donny's such a smug prick. I didn't get a chance to listen, but I heard McCain got Donny flustered.
i watched some of the senatorial q &a session. mccain has the moral authority to come down hard on this issue. i thought he could have been tougher on rummy. lieberman was a total whore warmonger. for a moment at the end of his speech after all his hyperventilating, i thought he might have swung so far out so as to gather momentum for landing a blow on his follow through. but he was strictly GI Joe Blow. sen byrd was giving his best pope john paul 2 fighting off the grim reaper impression. kennedy bloviated but noone had the sharp knives out. i thought lindsey graham was good. i cant decide if sen collins from maine is savvy or a nitwit.
schadenfreude central: watching rummy trying to maintain his humility.
rummy o meter
rummy also did say to expect more grim photos in the near future. he called the release of the images a criminal act. nice that he has his priorities in order. basically he said if people had shut up about this we could have buried it indefinately.
digby on lieberman
It all brings to mind a statement from Jenny Holtzer's Truisms: "The abuse of power comes as no surprise."
It looks like the writing is on the wall and Rumsfeld will be out. The situation is not getting better and with the election looming someone will need to take the spotlight off Bush directly. Rumsfeld has one last thing to give this administration, himself as the scapegoat. The question is whether or not it will be enough to take the blame off Bush and propel him to another victory in November?
They'll have to get someone from the outside, cause Wolfowitz is radioactive.
pepsi syndrome?
Kaplan (via dratfink) points out many reasons why Rummy will stay:
"Rumsfeld's entire inner circle is tainted—if not by the Abu Ghraib scandal, then by the controversies over the Iraq war and the "stovepiping" of false intelligence that led up to it. Confirmation hearings for a new secretary would be a golden opportunity to revisit each of these controversies in great detail, with an election just months away."
I'm wondering how Midge Decter is handling all this. Any word?
