Extreme Abstraction. (See previous post.) Actually Linda Besemer, one of the artists in the Albright-Knox's show of that name, isn't extreme. Why is she extreme--because she's anal-retentive and makes hundreds of super thin stripes? Why does the art world insist on obsessive repetitive complexity as a rite of passage? And Katharina Grosse--she's extreme because she paints on the walls? Why is covering a lot of wall surface area a rite of passage? And David Reed--why is he extreme? Because he's so polished and professional? My favorite piece of his is probably the video where he (poorly) digitally inserted one of his paintings into the background of the Michael Mann-produced '80s TV series Crime Story. Dennis Farina and some other guy are arguing and the whole time there's this jerking, shimmering abstract painting on the wall behind them. It wasn't extreme, but it was a good piece.
I guess the title means working the extremities of abstraction not very very abstract. Which then could mean that really the shows idea, or at least that the title wishes to promote, is something altogether 'other' than abstraction supposedly at work. For this reason Tom I thought you'd like it.
I thought it a funny title too, but not really. The artmob are still a little apprehensive of abstraction of the cutting likes of it unless it's already TOMBED. It's difficult you know when you just got to switch languages, switch position, switch the whole cutting blade....
Swoons' afraid of abstraction. Exactly the same who are afraid of BOO!
enough of my soup-box
well I saw it tonight. man, that place is HUGE. "gallery" is misleading.
I'm no visual art critic, but I thought it was a really fun show. they've got a little of everything.
btw: paperrad and cory will be performing here next weekend.
Your statement about "a little bit of everything" made me look at the website again. It sucks! I had the impression it was just the four artists I mentioned, but those are the ones participating in the extreme symposium (with Liz Larner now substituted for Katharina Grosse). In other words--the website doesn't list the artists in the exhibition. I see they've added a picture of an Ingrid Calame painting, so we know she's in it. So far, though, the names I've seen are all Big Names of Galleried Abstract Painters of the Last Ten Years. I'm not sure what Tree Wave or Cory or Rad has to do with extreme abstraction though--are you guys there to give the show a "wild and crazy young artist" element?
And how did your performance go, by the way?
