when was the last big snow like this? '96? This was more, right?
I think they're exaggerating. Check out my shot of the same street from Feb. '03.
I was here in '96--it was a lot bigger deal. This was just weather porn as usual.
i think the figures 26.9" for central park are correct. JC just got 20". I was in JC for the 96 storm (reported snowfall for ny as: "the memorable No. 3 and No. 2 storms, of Jan. 6-7, 1996, which left 20.2 inches, and Mar. 12-14, 1888, which dropped 21 inches.") I just think we handled the removal process with greater precision this time. IMHO/FWIW
I'm gauging the impact on--what day did the snow fall? What was the weather like the next day? How big were the piles on the sidewalk that we had to step over the next 10 days? '96 was definitely a bigger deal. I think they measured Central Park in a snow drift this year--7 inches difference on two sides of the Hudson, a few miles apart? I'll update tonight after I walk around lower Manhattan.
Just walked from WTC to Ferry without breaking stride--someone is making up those numbers.
The snow removal may be better now than 10 years ago but the cleared piles next to the sidewalks are standard size--nothing like the mountains we had to navigate around for a week in '96.
I remember Metro North had major delays in '96 because of snow piled up and frozen on the third rail.
Today all I'm hearing is some slowdowns on LIRR. Schools were open the day after the snow.
Big surprise: Bush lies, Cheney lies, the local weatherman lies--the latter for "exciting news."
In 96 the ground was already frozen so it didn't melt as fast.
