Just watched the trailer for A Scanner Darkly. It looks like an extended episode of Tom Goes to the Mayor. I'll see it out of loyalty to Phil Dick and the desire to hear his excellent words spoken by actors such as Robert Downey Jr. But there's a reason we had to wait twenty five years for a definitive Lord of the Rings--it took that long for the stink to clear from the '78 Ralph Bakshi version, which also showcased rotoscoped animation.
I saw that '78 flick in the theater. It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and absolutely the worst animated movie I've ever seen. Hideous.
Yes, I saw it when I was a kid at the Highland Park theatre and loved it, but when I rented it a few years ago I was really embarassed.
Also, parts of that story are just dumb to start off with. Those evil-demon things (Nazguls?) that are following the hobbits around because they can sense the ring, but when they are staying at that inn, they throw the monsters off their trail by making little straw lumps under the covers on their beds, and they go hide in a barn or whatever across the street, and as long as they are quiet and go to sleep it will be ok, the monsters give up in frustration for the evening after realizing the cunning trickery of the hobbits??? huh?
This may help explain the cunning of the hobbitses ...
