I can't find the definitive word on this issue. Here's The Register's story. Definitely some of those Sony's (the PCG-GT1) have defective chips in them. Apparently Sony isn't going to recall any machines (although NEC, in a similar situation, is) but they say they will test the chip of any buyer who thinks they might have a bad one, and replace it if necessary. I'm not sure about Sony's track record with this type of thing. Clearly they are not going to go out of business any time soon. But it still might be a hassle. I'd wait a little bit and see how this works out. I'll keep an eye out for headlines.
