Out of all languages presently spoken in the world, what percentage are spoken in NYC?
I have no idea, but I'm very curious. I'll guess 70% just to get things going. Probably it's much less than that. Or possibly there is no way to even get a grip on the number of different languages spoken in the world.
Any guesses? Any idea where to look for possible answers?
queens is the most ethnically diverse county in the u.s., and according to this, of the 2 million people in queens, 36% were born in another country and 44% speak another language. the language count was 100 for the period 1990-94. i read that the percentage of new yorkers that speak another lang at home in all of nyc is 48% - after the 2000 census (sorry no link).
(the qpl has english as a second language classes which used to get lines around the block until immigration started busting the classes.)
probably you can get more recent info from the 2000 census, though i didn't have much luck here. maybe alex can get that info.
Ok, 70% is ridiculous. But I'll bet its high.
