Yeah, I've linked to those guys before. Very cool. I'd be a node if I had broadband. I certainly support what they are doing. And if it ever worked out that the internet was shut down, these wifi networks would be the new internet.
Cory Doctorow (of boing boing fame) has been the most eloquent supporter of running such open networks. While everyone else prints unsubstantiated stories about how unsecured home and business networks are going to be exploited by spammers, child pornographers, and terrorists, Cory patiently explains why none of those are issues. In a strange twist of fate, the usually evil DMCA (digital millenium copyright act) actually shields such network operators from liability. As long as you are just providing connectivity, and you don't exert any editorial control, you are not liable for what goes over your system.
Boingo is a company trying to do the grass roots wifi network thing with a for profit model. Might work if cable and dsl service continues to be overpriced and under served. (He's the founder of earthlink)
