Senator Paul Wellstone's death is a tragedy in human terms, and a blow to mainstream resistance, as well as Democratic hopes in the Senate.
It was murder. & the sniper is a patsy. Come on people Am I really the only crackpot on the tree?
Dangerous and unscrupulous men (and women) occupy the White House. Control of the Senate hinges on a few close races. A Democratic contestant in one of those races dies within two weeks of the election. I'm sure it was just an accident.
very easy to believe the murder theory, not sure about the sniper, and no i will join you in the crackpot dept.
The Republicans are already on the attack against Mondale. Has-been Newt Gingrich appeared on Meet the Press to say that Mondale favors "privatization" of Soc Security, when in fact his position is the reverse.
Andrew Sullivan addresses Wellstone's mysteriously-timed death in a non-link-for-pay piece in Salon. Ironically, the supposed examples of "loony left" writing that he quotes (particularly Ted Rall's) sound a lot more reasonable than he does.
Wellstone's "accidental" death threw Minnesota to the Republicans, but it turned out it was what businesspeople call "belt and suspenders," just in case GOP fixes in the other states didn't come through.

wellstone was no shoo-in, he was getting pounded by the greens among other things. mondale ought to win easily. so this plot doesn't make hella sense to me...

Hey, I said they were dangerous and unscrupulous; I didn't say they were smart. Invading Iraq and pissing off every country in the world except one doesn't make much sense either, but they're planning to do it.
