Ridiculous. No distinction between "songs" (with lyrics) and instrumentals. Seems to reference specific recordings, rather than the actual composition (Star-spangled Banner 20th century?). And you're telling me that YMCA is better than anything Bob Dylan ever did?

OK, here’s the actual explanation from the NEA. I’m still not quite sure how they came up with the list, but it sounds like they put it through enough committees to satisfy the bureaucracy, with plenty of assistance from our friends with the licenses to make money off the stuff. This presentation of the data is a little more palatable, and it’s hard to argue with most of the choices when they’re not ranked. I suppose the hierarchic list reflects the usual blandness that results from our government’s somewhat conflicted efforts to address the arts in any way, shape or form.
