one of my favorite writers. if you haven't read him may i suggest ice shirt and fathers and crows, two of a series of his 7 dreams, the early history of europeans coming to north america. good wintertime reading. they are hefty. so far he's published 4. (and skinny, this new one i will want in hardback.)
we've got "the royal family" and the two you mentioned over here. my friend joe mentioned this writer as one jim louis may want to look into.
So one or three more to the list of books that are piling up around me unread.
i like his guts and style,,,,,
i love his historical work best, but i'm guessing what your friend is recommending to jim louis is his fiction about the seedier sides of modern cities. royal family being about san francisco's crack whores, and particularly a group of these who form a family of sorts around the legendary "queen," who's spit is like a drug. rainbow stories, thirteen stories, or atlas might be a good introduction if you want to start with something a little less daunting, page-wise.
Cool, thanks.
