Is it not bad enough that we have to endure the Repulican National Convention (103 days and counting)?
New Yorkers beware, now maybe the Olympics too:
New York City joined four European capitals — Paris, London, Madrid and Moscow — as the five cities unanimously selected today to advance to the final bidding round for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games.
the city is offering flushing meadow as alternative protest grounds for the republican convention. that would be convenient for who?
If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?
I’m rooting against the Olympics for selfish reasons: they will accelerate the gentrification that threatens to drive me out of Greenpoint. The Post had this write-up on a few little environmental problems that the promoters have conveniently neglected to mention…
okay, sorry to do this, but I literally just got this via email and it seemed timely to this thread (and I have to admit I chuckled once - maybe even twice..):

i was in madrid when this got announced. watched various euro channels to see different reactions. then the financial times had what seemed to be the inside dope...to wit:
It's Paris' to lose. London also has a good shot. The IOC said Madrid was the second-best prepared but no one thinks they'll win. No one thinks Moscow will win either.
Rio HAD a good shot and was expected to be a finalist, but lost it because of a recent crime wave (if calling in the national guard to battle drug lords for control of several neighborhoods is, like, a crime wave).
New York? Forget about it. _No one_ thinks there's any chance of us winning it.,thank goodness.
phew.
thanks for the inside-know (and welcome back)
