The good thing about tornadoes is they’re very localized. I was off today but got up early. The weather was too bad to go out birding, and we had some water leaking in when the drain out back couldn’t handle a heavy downpour around dawn, but the rain let up and radar showed the storm cell clearing the area by 7am with nothing behind it, so I walked up to 86th St to catch a bus to Vaux Park. I did hear something on TV about “possible tornado conditions” as I was leaving, but I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary as I walked up 4th Ave. I guess it would have been a different story if I’d gone the other way. The sun came out and the rain was gone (though it may have been the reason the Reef-Heron was a no-show today) and I’d almost forgotten about it until I got a call from work. My boss had heard there was a tornado in my neighborhood and wanted to be sure I was OK. That was news to me. A minute later Linda called. This was 12:30 or so, as I was getting on the bus back home, I guess just as the news was spreading.

After a survey of the house I don’t see any obvious damage. I went out on the deck where a beach umbrella blown into a treetop a few houses down was the only sign of devastation. Kitty was fine, although the cat sitter hadn’t made it in, so I fed her. I haven’t gone over to where it hit at 68th St (we’re on 74th) but the part of the neighborhood I walked through was perfectly normal; less damage than I’ve seen in other storms. Like I said, tornadoes are very localized.

Glad to hear it, but wow, the damage just a few blocks away was considerable. Looked like post-hurricane NOLA, blue roofs and everything.
