Signed up for ZipCar on Monday night and rented a car (a Mini) for a couple hours yesterday. Very slick operation. Almost no friction. Seriously couldn't be easier. I really wonder about what percentage of cars / customers / transactions give them problems? Seems like a potential nightmare for them, but I hope it's not and I hope they make it. Highly recommended. I pay $50 a year, plus a $25 one time sign up fee. Then I can reserve cars at a specific location, for a specific number of hours, and it starts around $8/hour. I think the mini was $11. Gas, parking, and tolls included. - jim 4-03-2008 1:16 am
we used to use them when we lived in carroll gardens, pre kids. it was overall a good experience, though sometimes no tthe car available that we wanted, or even sometimes nothing available, esp on weekends and holidays. i'm sure now, 7 years later, there a more cars in their fleet. we got stuck with a fiesta a bunch of times. not so sexy. - linda 4-03-2008 2:50 am [add a comment]
Which MINI? - mark 4-03-2008 3:06 am [add a comment]
I'm not sure about the model but I'm guessing whatever is the cheapest one. It was fun to drive, but didn't have too much power. Two door. And what I know as "tiptronic" trasmission from VW/Audi - i.e., automatic but you can switch it into a clutchless semi manual mode. I've been wanting to drive a Mini since they came out. Nice car. I'd love to try the more powerful one. - jim 4-03-2008 3:45 am [add a comment]
It was probably the Cooper rather than the Cooper S. There's a huge bump in power between the Cooper and the forced induction models. On the order of 50%. - mark 4-03-2008 8:18 am [add a comment]
I dreamt I was in the movie Italian Job last night. No doubt due to our MINI experience. - b. 4-03-2008 10:17 pm [add a comment]
My favorite Mini experience. My friend had one circa 1970 with the steering wheel on the right hand side. It was summer and a convertible so the top was down. He is over 6 ft. tall and I just kept doing things that you would never want to see someone do from what you think is the driver's seat do. I also was standing up a lot to make it look like we were giants. I have never seen such fear and bewilderment on other driver's faces before or after. That was so much fun. - ken 4-03-2008 10:34 pm [add a comment]
