Saw a robin the other day. Looked much more muted than the ones I remember from Texas. Are western robins a little less flamboyant? Something like this.

Here’s the Times posts consolidated. The historical documentation is cool; the rest is basic, but ok for a general audience.
Partnered with WNYC, they had a (brief) interview with Tom Stephenson, who I’ve met in Prospect Park. He’s a sound engineer, records birds around the world, and worked with the Dead at some point.
As far as American Robin goes, for a bird that occurs across the whole continent it’s pretty consistent, but there is a clinal range from paler in the west to darker in the east. And females are paler than males, so all populations will show a range of plumages.
