Noticed this yesterday. Citi Bike. $95/year for unlimited 45 minute rides. After 45 minutes it's "$2.50 for the next half hour, $6.50 for the next half hour, and $9 for every half hour after that. A trip begins when a bike is unlocked and ends when the bike is securely returned to any Citi Bike station." Looks like a ton of stations.

and what happens if it gets stolen?

You pay if you don't return the bike. They have your credit card from when you entered the program. But unless someone knocks you down mid-ride and steals it this seems pretty unlikely. I think the idea is that you take a bike, ride to your destination, and turn the bike in. Then repeat for your return ride (rather than locking the bike up yourself somehow between outbound and inbound trips.) The number of stations would seem to make this feasible.

$25 for a 7 day pass, a great deal compared to cabs or even subway for me as a visitor.

wow, the map indicate they are going to be everywhere. Really changes the streetscape.

will be interesting to see for sure. i wonder what the process for maintaining the bikes will be. great for tourists as suggested but would be nice to have some more bike locks for regular bikes as well.

Also, I didn't research enough so maybe it already does this, but you should be able to view the number of available bikes at any location from the web (or smartphone app.)
