perhaps not so surprisingly, churches offer gluten free wafers for communion in portland. at least they do at the lutheran church i went to for a memorial service last week. i remained seated through the bread and wine portion of events, so i can't vouch for it's tastiness, but i suppose that's not the point.
The position of the Catholic Church is that without wheat gluten, there is no transubstantiation, and thus you're not eating Jesus. The best they can offer is very low gluten wafers. Anything else is idolatry. Seriously.
I'm thinking, if Jesus used challah at the last supper, why not a strict requirement for the inclusion of egg? "How about some Challah Eucharist? You can taste the real Jesus!"
Also if is not a catholic host it ain't the real deal. -x-alter boy in training (transubstantiation)
