New Jersey Wildlife News

I spotted three pheasants today in Liberty State Park, one male and two female. Actually, they might have been grouses. I started walking toward them, and they ducked under a chain link fence into an area marked "No Trespassing - Hazardous Materials," thus evading me. I swear this happened.

That park gets some birds. In fact, there everywhere, as fall migration has begun. Most likely Pheasants, which would have very long tail feathers. They’re Asian birds, introduced as game. A female spent the last two winters in Central Park; maybe she’ll show up again soon. Grouse would be notable. They nest in forests not too far from here, but aren’t generally seen as coastal migrants local city parks. Lots of birds have found that “off limits” areas are safe for them; they go where people don’t, and they don’t worry about long-term side effects.
