Next up is a Sam Maloof inspired low back chair (google image search). Here it is basically put together, but that's the "easy" part. Seems like his stuff always follows this general process whereby the piece is made with greatly oversized pieces, and then once assembled a variety of sanders, scrapers, and grinders are used to sculpt the chair into its' final form. I think it makes for a cool final look, although it certainly isn't about economizing or saving material. Probably half this wood will be turned into saw dust before it's over. All done free hand, which is quite a departure in technique for my father's engineering mind.
