I see you are following the story of how The CMJ New Music Report was using their own "Certain Damage" compilation as a placeholder in the playlists of stations in instances where they could not verify a CD reported to them broke CMJ changed their policy.
One bizarre aspect of the story that you might not be aware of is that the magazine started using the word "Unverified" in those playlist slots . As the leader of a band called Unverified I was thrilled at the chart action, however spurious it might have been.
CMJ got a kick out of this situation and offered my band a free slot on the next "Certain Damage" CD, to be released on May 5, 2003.
As we are an unsigned, totally DIY band with no budget for promotion the opportunity to have a CD with our single on it shipped to thousands of stations for free is an amazing break. It also shows CMJ's willingness to help an underdog as well as their good humor in the face of such bad publicity.
Our website documents the entire strange tale and an mp3 of our single is available there as well.
Thanks,
Scotty Unverified
