for four years i commuted on waterways ferries from the old erie-lackawanna terminal in hoboken to the landing at the world financial center for my job in #1 WTC. it was a little more expensive than the path train but a lot more fun. i chose the open air section on the top deck. in the winter it was bracing and i would drink my coffee to help wake up for work. one year the hudson froze over and they brought in ice breakers to make a path for them to follow. ice flows from upstate would usually run for a month or two each year. in feb 93' after the rider truck bombing at wtc i rode home on a ferry after the 83 flight descent from the north tower. the path was shut down but the ferries kept running. nice work to the waterways ferry captains as first responders.
as an airplane rider you always wonder how well an emergency de-board would work after dumping in icy waters. the images of these people standing on the wings, holding hands, waiting for help is stunning.
i heard on the radio the coast guard rescuers came from sandy hook nj. shouldnt they be based closer to manhattan? say ellis island or governors island right here in the harbor.
