"The State Palace Theater was notorious for the overnight parties, where the drug ecstasy was openly available, say local hospital staff. "We were treating a dozen victims from that club every month," said Dr. Jorge Martinez, who works in the emergency room of New Orleans' Charity Hospital." What a joke. how many victims of alcohol related injuries come out of any of those New Orleans bars a month? 400 overdoses connected to "the Raves" in a five year period. How many raves? How man clubs?...How many were fatal? How many overdoses of any given perscription drug in the same time period in New Orleans? How many non drug or alcohol related car wrecks in the same 5 year period? How many violent offences were comitted by these tripping ravers? Not many I'll wager. How many alcohol related murders occur in New Orleans? It's like calling the West Nile virus an epidemic when something like 9 people have died from it in the past couple of years. mumble grumble mumble.
I think its like this, Eddie Jordan is a political creature with aspirations. Effecting the rave phenomenon (yeah there are rave clubs, or halls rented for that purpose), is a pretty easy "go after," as they are, at least around her, attended mostly by white middle class teenagers and twentysomethings, with a few runaways thrown in for flavor. If it were a politically desirable thing to do shutting down the rave movement on public grounds would present barely a challenge. It is my impression though that the political creature will slowly milk the issue, with occasional aggressive movements, a scapegoat here, and one there, while not entirely trampling on the "rights" of his future white constituents. An educated black political creature who sports the fashionable porkpie would be a goddamned fool not to take advantage of his very real access to the white middle class. (And as the son of a former politcal consultant I say that in all honesty non-judgementally). He only wants to protect the (politically valuable middle class) children. You couldn't be against protecting children could you? How could you?
I wish Mr. Jordan would strap on a coupla a nines and come clean up this CRACK COCAINE problem in the hood, but looka, nobody should be blamed for shying away from things that aren't easy, or effect a constituency nobody gives a fuck about except to realize there's a lot of RENT TO OWN money to be made offa these poor, disenfrachised, ill-educated, human beings who get out of bed every morning with hundred pound sacks of sand tied around there necks and then go out into the white world where people say shit like--"oh he likes being called nigger." Wow, look at me way out here like Rosanne Rosanadanna, thinking this was a rave. I think this is a nice place to hide though, off in a little comment section somewhere, in this vast electrified universe.
