The backscatter machines are the ones to worry about, since they use x-ray. The dosing estimates provided by the TSA are based on full-body dosing, which ain't how backscatter works. Due to the wavelength used, the skin receives the dose -- which is concentration of the energy in a much lower volume.

My way of responding to skeptics is, "Why not stare right into a laser? It's just 5 milliwatts. That's a tiny fraction of the light output of a regular light bulb."

All electromagnetic energy isn't the same.
