I can imagine no explanation for this. I'm tempted to not even comment, since it is so ridiculous, but I can't help myself.
I think Grimes has no clue. He should be doing food reviews for Maxim. Too intellectual? That's a criticism? This is like Roberta Smith saying "I don't like this painting because it's too difficult to understand - it should have some puppy dogs in it, maybe playing cards, that would be cute."
If there was a surprise it should have been 4 stars, not 2.
The only good thing about this is that Grimes has painted himself into a corner. How can he ever give a place 3 stars again? It's now impossible.
Bring back Asimov!!!
And yes, of course, I also have no clue.
But I don't write for the new york times. I'm just a stupid blogger.
To be fair, the critique is similar to the New York mag review, and seems to represent a sense of obligation (or condescension?) towards the readership's wants and needs. Your art analogy isn't that extreme: Picasso and Matisse are widely considered the top painters of the first half of the 20th century, and you can find people who rate Matisse as "better" simply because he's (perhaps superficially) more "accessible". Still, I was surprised at the stars, and could easily imagine the same review with a 3 star rating. (Of course, I have no clue 'cause I haven't actually eaten there...)
he didnt like the room and other stuff that held him back from 3*, but the food is 4* to us, the worst part is he gives more stars to less quality spots
Ok, so I am a tad biased regarding the establishment in question, but I'm very annoyed at the man, Mr. Grimes. I could go into details, but it would give him more credence and besides, my words would be unseemly. Thanks for your good words Mike, what matters are the diners like you. Who get it and who keep coming back and who grin with delight and make the staff feel good.
see you on tuesday:>)
"... but in the end, Mr. Dufresne should listen to his muse and ignore everyone else."
amen to that
