Well, I've done a lot of testing and I can't get any of these comment problems to happen again. But I saw some happen yesterday (in the wild, as it were) so I know that something is up. I'll keep looking.

Did somebody say something about having to scroll down on the /settings page before you see any text? That doesn't sound right. Can someone confirm this with browser/OS information?

Does this happen on any other pages?

Thanks.

same for me. must scroll halfway down the page before you see any text.

I, er, that would be me. I log on to the net w/ aol and it is happening there that after hitting the settings button that it apears the page is blank but after scrolling down you find the settings area. I usually use NN after logging w/ aol via modem, but NN aintworking for me right now for some reason. It just bogs down while loading in so I cant say if it's happening there as well.. Using win 98 w/ hp pavilion.

Same thing happens to me, I posted comment saying that the page was blank. Third time I went to settings I noticed that the scroll bar was active, I scrolled down for what felt like a whole page before finding the settings. So I deleted the posted comment. I'm running Netscape Communnicator 4.5

also, comments I'm posting don't appear immediately. Last night I was posting comments about this problem and you were following me with tests, even posting logged in as me. I thought the problem was fixed but it's still happening, I assume that my last comment did post but it isn't showing up yet. I suspect that if I go to the home page then return to this page it will appear.

Well, I've posted two comments to this thread and after surfing around the site and returning I still don't see them. This was happening last night. I'm going to quit netscape and relaunch it and return to see if that will get them to appear.

more hangers on this page now. one last night. three this morning.
- dave 1-14-2002 3:43 pm [add a comment]

  • i just cleared it and came back and there are two comments hanging now.
    - dave 1-14-2002 6:48 pm [add a comment]

    • I've probably posted 5 comments to this thread using the box at the bottom of the page. This time I used the add a comment function that brings the box up on it's own separate page. There are 10 comments listed on this thread but I only see 4 none of which are mine. Does anyone see this comment? Does anyone see my other comments in this thread?
      - steve 1-14-2002 7:19 pm [add a comment]

      • OK, I see my last comment. Apparantly the "add a comment to this page" box isn't working. But I do think my comments are being included by the counter so I assume they are somewhere on the site.
        - steve 1-14-2002 7:23 pm [add a comment]

OK, my comments are still not showing up. The comment counter shows 5 comments in this thread but I only see 3.
- steve 1-14-2002 3:44 pm [add a comment]

I'm now going to try logging out and back in.
- steve 1-14-2002 3:45 pm [add a comment]

Logged out and there was no log in option on home page, went to treehouse and logged in. 8 comments listed for this thread only three show up for me.
- steve 1-14-2002 3:47 pm [add a comment]

Very strange. I fixed Steve's posts so they show now. They are being posted without a bit of meta information that the system should be providing at post time, and without that they won't show up. The weird thing is that this only seems to be happening to Steve. This should be a big enough clue for me to figure out what is happening, but so far no luck. I'll keep trying. Sorry about all this. Please keep reporting.
- jim 1-14-2002 4:23 pm [add a comment]

  • Hitting the view this whole thread button made all my comments show up. That or the timing was such that you fixed the problem and I hit the view whole thread button simultaneously.
    - steve 1-14-2002 7:27 pm [add a comment]

OK, I found something. It makes sense that this was the problem, but of course I can't be sure. I'm surprised I found it actually. There was an incorrectly closed tag on the comment page posting box (the HTML was slightly wrong) and perhaps Steve's browser was foiled while other newer (more liberal) browsers were not. Quite possible. Steve if you read this try to post something to this thread. I'm going to email you too. Sorry again.

just figured id try this to see what happens? anybody see that surfing thing on pbs last night?
- dave 1-14-2002 4:29 pm [add a comment]

Posting this using the add a comment to this page box appearing under your comment
- steve 1-14-2002 4:30 pm [add a comment]

  • I think it was the other way (with the box at the bottom of this page) that was the problem. At least that's where I just found the problem I fixed. Can you try that way?
    - jim 1-14-2002 7:32 pm [add a comment]

Yeah, I think the box at bottom of this page was the problem too. That's what I was trying to say. I'm using said box to post this. P.S. Dave's surfing link worked.
- steve 1-14-2002 4:36 pm [add a comment]

Seems to be working now but didn't convert my line break at the P.S. to html
- steve 1-14-2002 4:37 pm [add a comment]

should this be converting my line break to html? Or am I being unreasonable? Huh?
- steve 1-14-2002 4:38 pm [add a comment]

  • Well frankly, I'd be happy if it just worked at this point but somebody needs to always want more or I'd never do anything. OK, it should now give you the option (you control whether it's checked by default or not in /settings) to convert line breaks to HTML. Unregistered users do not see the option (in an effort to keep everything as simple as possible, but nonetheless their line breaks will be converted to HTML.

At least that's what should happen.

    I wonder...
    - jim 1-14-2002 7:47 pm [add a comment]

    • Sorry, I wasn't suggesting that it should convert line breaks to HTML, I was thinking that it was supposed to and wasn't working, I was really only testing it. Although I didn't suspect that the html issue was connected to the hanging post or no show post problems, just that it was another one...
      OK,
      Testing
      The
      HTML
      now
      Frank will thank us both

little problem in finkville. i mean, i wanted to update my page but.......i was changing the number of posts that would show up on my page in the editpage function and as far as i know all i changed was a "5" to a "7" in the proper field....whoosh.
- dave 1-14-2002 5:36 pm [add a comment]

  • Fixed. I'm still looking for the cause. I'll let you know.
    - jim 1-14-2002 8:48 pm [add a comment]

  • Yeah, I found the problem. This shouldn't happen again.
    - jim 1-14-2002 8:52 pm [add a comment]

  • it better not or im cancelling my service contract.
    - dave 1-14-2002 8:55 pm [add a comment]

Hanging chad..er comments in fink and treehouse. 10:01 am Tues, Jan 15, 02
- steve 1-15-2002 3:01 pm [add a comment]

I didn't have to scroll down in the settings page, all controls at top.
:o)
- steve 1-15-2002 3:03 pm [add a comment]

  • Yeah I fixed that. I just didn't know before that was happening.

Hopefully the hanging comments are fixed now also. I made the two you pointed me to before. It happened because I previewed them and then switched them to regular posts. The bugs we found yesterday made this mostly work (the comments at least appeared) but still the new comment system was not getting the right info. But I found this latest problem and just fixed it. There still might be more though. We are definitely making progress.

    Thanks Steve.

did you get my message about preset text for the post box on dratfink? i put it into the suggestions area but i dont know if that if viewed regularly.
- dave 1-15-2002 3:26 pm [add a comment]

  • Yeah, I have all those pages on my front page, so I always see. I'm just sort of temporarily ignoring it as I try to save myself from the embarrassment of the [new comment] system sort of fucking up. Almost there.
    - jim 1-15-2002 6:30 pm [add a comment]

    • whats there to be embarrassed about? most of us cant even spell our own names much less figure out coding. wed all be scrawling on the floor with chalk if i were in charge.
