Initial tests of the music upload (and download) system are looking positive. I should have a rough version up by this evening. We've got a lot of bandwidth going to waste.
I've been thinking of posting that Ferrum 5000 mpeg. Would that be too big?
It'd be too big for you to post through the web interface, but I could put it up if you send it to me.
How big is it?
560 megs
That's big! Steve, I forgot where you asked this, but I don't know to hook up a turntable to a Mac. In my next life (or maybe when I'm 60) I'm going to have a complete digital music studio so I can do some of the stupid stuff I've been playing around with using lock grooves, a cassette deck and my old Mac SE, on a slightly more professional level.
Is this article any help? He's talking the whole system, not the turntable direct. I've been wondering about this, with respect to all the records I haven't listened to in years. Of course first I need a new computer and a turntable that actually works…
Thanks Alex, that's great info.
Er.....the program they recommend for the Mac platform seems to be $399.00, almost 10X the amount of the programs for windows. The hunt continues.
What are the specs on that 560 number?
30 frames/sec at full screen resolution?
What codec is it encoded with? (It's not mp4, is it?)
I'm sure we can make something that looks good at a smaller file size (although it's still going to be huge.) We've got the bandwidth to do it, provided it doesn't get super popular.
It's mpeg. The quicktime file you made for me summer 2001.
560 megs, 486 x 324 pixels.
It's about the size of a large postage stamp when viewed through the "get info" preview mode and looks pretty good. I think it should be larger than that if possible but no need for it to be as large as it is now. Do you still have the original mini dv or did you give that back to me? (in which case it's in my apt in NYC) I could mail this disk to you if that helps. Would re-mpeg-ing be necessary to reduce the file size? If so, would there be a loss of quality?

Not sure how to determine the frame rate through quicktime.
I seriously doubt that popularity would be a problem.
