Some changes lately. A few more things coming. So far:
/admin is now a little different. You don't see every subscriber (because really, who cares,) but only people who can post and/or create sub pages. So for most pages this will just be you.
guests who choose a name when commenting can now check a box to be remembered. This automatically makes them a basic account and sets a cookie.
/user ([add user]) is now simplified. And it allows you to make a page for the person. Please use this. I'd love to see more people on the site.
one nice feature for guest might be for them to be able to leave an email address or link to their homepage so people like mr bloggy dont have to retype their weblog address in the post. that function seems to be pretty standard in on most comment systems.
also, i ran into rachel on my way out last night. she said that she can only see my side links and not my posts on her computer. obviously, she was very distressed. i told her you would be more than happy to help.
On the other hand, bloggy's comment page won't let you comment unless you at least leave an email address (if you have a URL, that becomes the link associated with your name, if you don't, the email becomes the link). This wouldn't deter our recent witty fellow, but would dissuade the occasional shy genius--or Mr. Colley--from commenting.
I found one minor error in the HTML on dratfink. I doubt that is the problem, but since I don't have the problem I can't be sure.
I have no confidence about the validity of the HTML on that page.
Maybe I can get one of the office machines to reproduce the error. Without that I don't have much chance at fixing it.
As for the web or email link on the name: I like that idea, but I wouldn't want to make supplying it mandatory. Maybe I'll add the option to [settings].
I like to visit web pages or comment anonymously sometimes before announcing myself. I could see having blanks for email addresses or urls as long as it said (optional) before the blank.
I ended up deciding not to use reference logging on most of my pages because I felt like it was outing people's self-searches (by picking up not just links but google searches), or links from pages that people wanted to keep within a circle of friends.
Having the option in settings is a good idea. It's not a super big issue for me.
i didnt want it to be mandatory, just as an option.
as to rachel -- what, you dont make housecalls?
Rachel may have the same problem I've had since dratfink updated his links. The content and the new links are actually there, but way down the page and over to the right, with the text squeezed into a one-word column; the top of the page just has the old link columns with no content between them.
is that still happening now?
Now it’s even more mixed up. There are posts at the top of the page, but they run in long horizontal lines and the old link columns are superimposed over them. The new format is still way down and right (causing a horizontal scroll bar) but there is only one group of links, while the posts have invaded the orange columns.
Running Explorer5.2/ Mac OSX.2 Dratfink looks great. Running Netscape 4.77/Mac OS 9.2 it looks simmilar to Alex's description but the horizontal scroll bar does not appear. Shrinking or expanding the window mushes the elements around.
