"we hit birds"
Geese on the way to Liberty State Park?
Brant and Canada Geese are plentiful this time of year, hope it wasn't that vagrant Pink-footed Goose in Queens lately. A birder reports.
for four years i commuted on waterways ferries from the old erie-lackawanna terminal in hoboken to the landing at the world financial center for my job in #1 WTC. it was a little more expensive than the path train but a lot more fun. i chose the open air section on the top deck. in the winter it was bracing and i would drink my coffee to help wake up for work. one year the hudson froze over and they brought in ice breakers to make a path for them to follow. ice flows from upstate would usually run for a month or two each year. in feb 93' after the rider truck bombing at wtc i rode home on a ferry after the 83 flight descent from the north tower. the path was shut down but the ferries kept running. nice work to the waterways ferry captains as first responders.
as an airplane rider you always wonder how well an emergency de-board would work after dumping in icy waters. the images of these people standing on the wings, holding hands, waiting for help is stunning.
i heard on the radio the coast guard rescuers came from sandy hook nj. shouldnt they be based closer to manhattan? say ellis island or governors island right here in the harbor.
Glad it had a happy ending. I guess I forgot planes floated. As for Canada geese, they are year round, right?--the new rats.
Actually it turns out to be a great add for Airbus because they developed a way to seal off the bottom part of the fusilodge which allows the plane to float longer. Heard it on NPR.
My friend's father used to be head of the pilots union and says the drills for water ditching are basically "just going through the motions" because the odds for survival are so slim. He adds that this is the first jumbo jet water ditch with no fatalities.
Yay!
it's funny, this last time we flew and the stewards were giving the safety run through at the beginning of the flight I was thinking, "if the crashes what good would the floating devises or oxygen be?" I like the idea that the plane crashed but everybody survived as a metaphore for 2009.

My oldest friend lives with an AC pilot and he's not impressed with much, it's what they're trained to do, but this event impressed him. (along with that glider style jumbo jet landing in Europe about 7 or 8 years ago. He and the other pilots couldn't stop yakking about it)
lets go to the video tape
i like the nytimes story about the girl whom had been thru tornado's, eye's of a huricane, sunami, etc and survived this too
some more footage
