Another mega-rarity for Coney Island (assuming it's accepted as legitimate.) I was there yesterday when the Times photographer showed up for their typically lame coverage; have I mentioned that "seagull" is an inaccurate term?
one for the life list!
Only if it's accepted by NYSARC. Similar to my Reef-heron, it's not a highly migratory species, so people have doubts about its origins. There’s no clear evidence of captivity, such as a leg band, but some have questioned the feather-wear patterns. Ship-assisted vagrancy is also suspected, but that’s considered legitimate. There’s only one US record, from Florida, but unless someone cops to losing a captive bird it’s likely to be OKd.
ahh, Ship-assisted vagrancy = stowaway.
