you can come over and ill plug in a night light and blow my one 15 amp fuse if you are looking for some simulated storm outages. as an added bonus i can run the water as you try to fix the leaky showerhead before the ceiling falls in on you.
- dave 8-27-2011 6:52 pm [add a comment]

nice subtle insert of the will you at least look at my showerhead, sometime this year? the answer is definitely sometime this year. but only if you come over and run a hose all night in the shaftway to justify my recent sandbagging of the back door into our basement.
- jimlouis 8-27-2011 7:06 pm [add a comment]

i actually didnt have that in mind. the showerhead part was inserted solely for comedic purposes. but now that you mentioned it... though if all goes according to plan i may have a new hd tv and that nfl directv package soon so you might be looking for excuses to stop by as difficult as that is to imagine.
- dave 8-27-2011 9:14 pm [add a comment]

imagine it, hell I'd even be willing to start sucking up just in case it does happen. you are a real interesting fella. your knowledge of various sports is second to none. although I have yet to try it I understand your homemade purified seltzer water is the best on Orchard St. and I'll just stop there until I find out whether or not you also plan to serve nachos during the games. hey how bout this hurricane?
- jimlouis 8-27-2011 10:05 pm [add a comment]

what's going on, people? anything to report?
- linda 8-28-2011 3:10 am [add a comment]

just a steady normal rain, nothing remotely dramatic yet from this perspective. not enough water collected in rivington shaftway to challenge the sandbags yet, or maybe the covert garden hose siphon down into Schiller's lower shaftway is working, because they have a fair amount of collected water, and good for them apparently a working drain, although a small one for the amount of runoff they get. so no, nothing to report.

Lucas has passed out due to all the storm excitement. Wish I could post a photo (Jim?). We are sitting here having eaten all our rations in one go. We have had to resort to pate on rice crackers. Dave is here keeping us safe and sane - and we are trying to keep him off his bike which he ridiculously thinks he can ride home. Come on Irene!

we are getting pooling in the usual low spots. its a big storm and we are saturated now. hoboken and jc are low spots. im projecting surge problems there. nyc has a better infrastructure for dealing w problems.

I give up, this storm is never going to amount to anything: LucasIrene

don't do it dave, ii fear you'll be like the wicked witch of the west riding in the tornado.

I'm gonna eat some pate on crackers now in solidarity.
Seen any rats yet?

Since your servers are still running, shouldn't you all be looking up how to make batteries out of potatoes. (that is something I always forget)

alex!!!! whats up???

any power outages? lower jc and hobken electric being intentionally shut down.

- bill 8-28-2011 1:50 pm [add a comment]

No issues here. They sandbagged the back wall so I barely got any seepage. Lack of transportation screws up the birding though; I'm going to take a walk, but it'll probably be too late to catch any displaced tropical seabirds.

It rained in Manhattan. One of my plants tipped over on the fire escape so I brought it in. The wind does seem to be picking up. The East Village was like a ghost town yesterday.

According to Storm Tracker Irene is here right now? Hmm. I wish I had some bacon.

whoops. i guess this became the official stormcracker thread. two thumbs up for 365 brand flatbread. while the carr's wilted in the humidity, 365 stayed crisp under hurricane tropical storm level snacking conditions. try it at your next natural disaster get together, or whenever you stomach is rumbling like a 6.4 degree eatquake on the andy richter scale!

Spent the evening positioning buckets under drips, fell asleep, woke up, moved buckets again, emptied them. (That back bedroom roof will be fixed eventually.) Thanks to our intrepid newsgathering agencies I looked in the closet before this happened and was able to move some boxes of important old papers into the "safe zone."

there are no important papers in new jersey, tom. you of all people should know that.
- dave 8-28-2011 8:06 pm [add a comment]

Well, it has turned out to be an epic day for local birders. Many seabirds were forced inland and have been streaming down the Hudson and East Rivers, and along Long Island. With help from some more-knowledgeable folks I managed to see Leach's and Wilson's Storm-Petrels, Greater Shearwater, and Red-necked Phalarope from the foot of Veteran's Pier in Bay Ridge. Numerous other rarities are reported around the area. Storm birding is legendary, but rarely pans out on this scale; probably the biggest day in a generation.

True, Dave, but there is a Christie's auction house (as in "put the state up for...")
