randomly, also in the box with the fortunes was a medallion. i had no memory of a connection to it and was on the way to the garbage as i inspected it for the first time. appeared to be wrestling related. on the back is my grandfathers name, dave wolff, etched in. above that it says 160 Division, 1927 - 28. probably senior year of high school.
which HS? may still exist.
it was probably jamaica high school. he lived in what they called the 4th ward on delap place which no longer exists but i found it on an nypl map. a lot of the street names have been changed to numbers but it was just south of hillside avenue. i think its 88th ave beween merrick blvd and 168 st.
if it was jamaica high which was only a couple of blocks away, and i think he taught history there later, also my mother and aunt went there, he would have been in the same class as paul bowles.
just closed as a unified school very recently. broken up into smaller schools to combat terrible graduation rates.
Thats pretty amazing. sad that it declined. It bears further investigation. great NYC high school.
the article investigates it pretty thoroughly. smart kids with pro-active parents left for other schools and those left behind were en masse non-english speaking immigrants which the school was ill-equipped to handle. also involved were changing bureaucratic notions about school size necessary to combat the high drop out rates.
COOL!!
