well, i slept through the french open final and so apparently did federer but fear not sports fans the uefa eurocup not to be confused with the uefa champions league will make for great backround noise on these sweaty june afternoons. and if thats not boring enough for you, us open golf swings into action on thursday. will phil and tiger exchange pleasantries as they walk down the fairway? tune in to find out!!!

meanwhile, the lakers are looking like a steaming pile of big brown thus far in the finals. maybe coming home will revitalize them. but its over tonight if they cant muster up some urgency.

the goddess on tcm now. interesting look at pre-communist shanghai if nothing else.
Wu Yonggang made his directorial debut at Lianhua Film Company with The Goddess — or Shennü, which colloquially denotes a prostitute. Ruan Lingyu portrays a young mother forced into prostitution to support her son and provide him with an education. The sympathetic depiction of a streetwalker against the background of a predatory city makes this film surprisingly modern. Revealing the degradation of poverty and the exploitation of poor women, The Goddess criticises the feudal foundations of modern China. Ruan Lingyu brings great humanity to her role. Through emotionally powerful but very naturalistic acting for the time, she elevates the social outcast to the status of heroine. Shanghai was home to some 100 000 prostitutes by the 1930s and the subject regularly found its way onto the screen.

in colbertese, its time for another spor repor.

the nba finals kicks off tonight. the nba is creaming over the matchup of their two marquee franchises. as was just noted, between the two teams theyve won half of the nba championships. as a casual fan i was sick and tired of the hype the second it became a reality but should be an entertaining final. i take the lakers in six.

and i watched my first bit of the french open today as number two ranked ana ivanovic closed out an impressive three set victory over fellow serb and third ranked yelena jankovic. shell face thirteenth ranked dinara safina on saturday in the finals. shes beaten the number one and number four seed on the way to the finals. put my money on ivanovic but.......

this just in, james taylor is singing the national anthem in boston. snore.......

the top three men are still in the hunt in paris. heres a rundown of the semifinals tomorrow.

oh yeah, big brown (what a crap name, no pun intended.) goes for the triple crown at belmont on saturday?

mtvs the paper looks marginally more intriguing than their usual vapid fare.

Google maps, what a joker. Thinking about taking a day off next week and going to a N. Carolina beach and I put in my zip code as starting point and N. Carolina beach as end point but I forgot the last number and the four digit number I did put evidently corresponds to Australia. So Google maps gives actual directions from a point in Australia up to the water's edge and then says, "kayak across the Pacific Ocean," 12,742 km. And then picks up again in Washington State and gives directions to NC. Total trip, "17,796 km, about 42 days, 17 hours."
